How We Evaluate & Treat Thyroid Disease
Comprehensive Thyroid Function Testing
We start with TSH, free T4, and free T3 โ and add thyroid antibodies (anti-TPO, anti-thyroglobulin, TSI) when autoimmune thyroid disease is suspected. We interpret these results in the context of your symptoms, not just "normal ranges."
Thyroid Ultrasound When Needed
For patients with palpable nodules, goiter, or abnormal imaging, we order thyroid ultrasound and interpret it using TI-RADS criteria. We also coordinate fine needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy when criteria are met.
Individualized Treatment
Treatment depends entirely on your diagnosis. Hypothyroidism is treated with levothyroxine โ we optimize your dose to relieve symptoms, not just normalize TSH. Hyperthyroidism may be managed with anti-thyroid medications, radioactive iodine, or surgery depending on your specific situation.
Long-Term Monitoring & Follow-Up
Thyroid conditions require ongoing management. We schedule regular follow-up to monitor levels, adjust medications as needed, and watch for any changes in nodule size or disease activity over time.

Thyroid Specialist FAQ
My primary care doctor manages my thyroid โ why would I see an endocrinologist?
Endocrinologists have 2โ3 additional years of fellowship training specifically in thyroid disease and hormone disorders. We're the right choice if your symptoms persist despite treatment, if your levels are difficult to stabilize, if you have a thyroid nodule, or if you've been diagnosed with thyroid cancer or Graves' disease.
I take levothyroxine but still feel tired. Can you help?
Yes โ this is one of the most common reasons patients seek an endocrinologist. Optimal thyroid replacement is individualized. Some patients require both T4 and T3 therapy, or dose adjustments beyond what normalizes TSH alone. We evaluate the full picture including free T3 levels and symptoms.
What is the difference between a thyroid nodule and thyroid cancer?
The vast majority of thyroid nodules (over 95%) are benign. Thyroid cancer is found in a small percentage of nodules and is generally one of the most treatable cancers when caught early. Ultrasound evaluation and selective biopsy help identify the rare nodules that require further workup.
Do you treat thyroid conditions during pregnancy?
Yes. Thyroid disorders are particularly important to manage carefully during pregnancy, as both hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism can affect fetal development. We have experience managing thyroid disease in pregnant patients and work closely with obstetric providers.
How do I know if my thyroid symptoms are from Hashimoto's vs. hypothyroidism?
Hashimoto's thyroiditis is the most common cause of hypothyroidism in the US โ they often co-exist. We test for thyroid antibodies (anti-TPO) to confirm autoimmune thyroid disease. Knowing the cause guides monitoring and helps identify associated autoimmune conditions.
