About Dr. Basa
Dr. Amelita Lourdes Basa is board-certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in Diabetes, Endocrinology, and Metabolism. With more than 30 years of experience, she brings deep expertise in osteoporosis and screening, thyroid disorders, and diabetes and glucose monitoring.
Dr. Basa earned her medical degree from the University of Santo Tomas Faculty of Medicine and Surgery in Manila, Philippines, where she graduated cum laude and placed among the board top-notchers in the Physician Licensure Examinations.
Following her medical internship and residency training in Internal Medicine at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York City, she completed her fellowship in Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism at Baylor College of Medicine / MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. Her fellowship training spanned Texas Children's Hospital, Ben Taub/Harris County Hospital, the Houston VA Medical Center, MD Anderson Cancer Center, and St. Luke's Hospital. She subsequently joined the clinical faculty of Baylor College of Medicine and practiced endocrinology at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center in Houston.
Career & Leadership
Dr. Basa moved to New Orleans to continue her endocrinology practice at Ochsner Clinic, where she was appointed Director of the Diabetes Institute of Ochsner Medical Center. She was also an active speaker and consultant to institutional boards and pharmaceutical companies, and was involved in clinical research, co-authoring a number of peer-reviewed clinical articles.
After several years in Louisiana, Dr. Basa moved back to Houston and established her own clinical practice in endocrinology. Prior to joining Endocrine & Diabetes Plus Clinic, she practiced as an endocrinologist with Diabetes America, The VA Medical Center, Diabetes Relief, and Legacy Clinic.
Dr. Basa is now a full-time member of the Endocrine & Diabetes Plus Clinic of Houston and is currently affiliated with Memorial Hermann Hospital Health System. She is also involved in clinical education, contributing to the training of residents at the Memorial Hermann Family Medicine Residency Program.
Personal
When not working, Dr. Basa enjoys quality time with her husband and two children (plus her two dogs). She loves to travel and to volunteer in school and community activities, especially charity events.
