About Dr. Varughese

Dr. Libu Varughese is a board-certified endocrinologist named to the 2020 Texas Super Doctors Rising Stars and recognized as a Top Endocrinologist in Houston by America's Best Doctors. He is also a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Houston College of Medicine and actively teaches residents at the Memorial Hermann Family Medicine Residency Program.

A native Houstonian, Dr. Varughese attended medical school at the age of 16 at Mahatma Gandhi University in India. He relocated to the United States to complete his residency in internal medicine at St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Centre in Phoenix, where he served as Internal Medicine Chief Resident and Co-chair for the American College of Physicians Council of Resident/Fellow Members.

With a strong desire to improve access to healthcare, he was featured in the Catholic Health World newsletter as part of a team working to overcome obstacles faced by the chronically ill, and worked in several community outreach clinics during his training.

Dr. Varughese then completed his fellowship in Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism at Baylor College of Medicine / MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. His fellowship training spanned Texas Children's Hospital, Ben Taub/Harris County Hospital, the Houston VA Medical Center, MD Anderson Cancer Center, and St. Luke's Hospital. His research focused on diabetes medication and its effects on inflammation and endothelial dysfunction. A resident of Sugar Land, he is deeply committed to his patients and community.

He is double board-certified in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism by the American Board of Internal Medicine, and is an active member of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists. He serves as the 2025 President of the Harris County Medical Society — Southwest Chapter, and is an active member of the Texas Medical Association, the Harris County Medical Society, and the Fort Bend County Medical Society.

Dr. Varughese has broad expertise across all areas of endocrinology, with particular interest in diabetes, thyroid disease, osteoporosis, adrenal disease, low testosterone, and pituitary disease.

He is affiliated with Memorial Hermann Texas Medical Center, St. Luke's Hospital, and Methodist Hospital.

Personal

Dr. Varughese lives in Sugar Land with his mother, wife, and two kids. Outside of medicine, he loves DIY home improvement projects, teaches Sunday school at church, and volunteers with the prison ministry.
