Fatty Liver Testing
Metabolic-Associated Fatty Liver Disease (MAFLD/MASLD) is closely linked to diabetes and metabolic syndrome. We offer specialized evaluation, in-office FibroScan, and personalized treatment.
What is Fatty Liver Disease?
Fatty liver disease โ now called Metabolic-Associated Fatty Liver Disease (MAFLD) or Metabolic-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD) โ is the most common liver condition in the United States. It occurs when excess fat accumulates in liver cells due to metabolic dysfunction.
MAFLD is strongly associated with Type 2 diabetes, insulin resistance, obesity, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure. As endocrinologists, we are uniquely positioned to evaluate and manage fatty liver as part of your overall metabolic health.
If left untreated, MAFLD can progress to Metabolic-Associated Steatohepatitis (MASH) โ inflammation and liver cell damage โ and eventually fibrosis, cirrhosis, or liver cancer. Early detection and metabolic optimization are the keys to preventing progression.
Who Should Be Tested?
You may benefit from fatty liver evaluation if you have one or more of the following:
- Type 2 diabetes or prediabetes
- Insulin resistance or metabolic syndrome
- Obesity or excess abdominal fat
- Elevated liver enzymes (ALT/AST) on bloodwork
- High triglycerides or low HDL cholesterol
- High blood pressure
- Family history of liver disease
- Hispanic ethnicity (higher genetic predisposition)
Our Evaluation Process
Metabolic Assessment
We review your full metabolic profile โ blood sugar control, insulin levels, lipid panel, liver enzymes, and body composition โ to assess your overall risk and metabolic drivers.
Non-Invasive Liver Scoring
We use validated non-invasive scoring tools (such as FIB-4 and the NAFLD Fibrosis Score) to assess the likelihood and severity of liver involvement without the need for biopsy in most cases.
FibroScan (In-Office)
We offer FibroScan in our clinic โ a quick, painless scan that measures both liver fat (CAP score) and liver stiffness/fibrosis (kPa). No biopsy, no radiation, results same day. How to prepare โ
Personalized Treatment Plan
Treatment targets the underlying metabolic drivers: blood sugar control, weight management, lipid management, and lifestyle modification. New FDA-approved medications for MASH โ including resmetirom (Rezdiffra) and GLP-1 agonists โ are available for appropriate patients.
